Applications are invited for volunteers to join our organisation on a 12-month volunteer programme starting in August 2019. The Sheiling provides residential care and education, incorporating an anthroposophical approach, for children and young people (aged 5 to 24) who have severe and often complex special education needs (SEN) and we are looking for people with energy, resilience and enthusiasm to join us in this temporary role.
This is an opportunity for you to develop your skills and experience before making further career decisions, taking on further study or using this experience to make a difference in working with children or adults who have learning disabilities, when you return to your home community.
You will work alongside colleagues in our care and education teams by providing support to our students as they develop their educational, personal and social skills and assist with special projects. We provide 'waking day' curriculum where all members of staff contribute 24/7 to helping our students develop their social, educational and emotional maturity. Often working with a specific student you will support them in achieving individual targets and to pursue leisure interests. You'll join one of 6 small teams of care workers and work within a weekly shift system. Comprehensive training will be provided throughout your placement.
Bringing a diverse range of cultural interests, perspectives and experiences our volunteers provide a contribution which enriches and builds upon the work of our permanent staff. In return you will have a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference and experience a great sense of achievement. While this position is unpaid, you will be provided with food, accommodation and payment of agreed expenses.
We particularly welcome overseas applicants who are eligible to work with us due to EU/EEA nationality or under the UK Tier 5 (Charity Worker) Visa permissions.
Applications are invited from 1st November 2019
Interviews will be conducted from January 2019 onwards in person or via Skype and you will be contacted to confirm the date and time for this to take place.
